This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who plans to pursue a career in the transportation engineering field. The preferred candidate will work on real-life projects in addition to being rotated throughout the Planning & Environmental Management (PLEMO) office while gaining experience in the following areas: Planning, Environmental, Metropolitan Organizations.
The intern will be introduced to policy and mobility planning and system analytics and given basic tasks that would develop his/her skills in transportation project development, traffic data analysis, travel demand forecasting, and site impact reviews.
The intern will perform the following tasks:
- Plans review related to Florida’s Strategic Intermodal System (SIS), Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO’s) Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs) and Long-Range Transportation Plans (LRTPs), and other city, county, and transit agency transportation improvement plans
- Planning studies and project review to assist in compiling information to analyze corridors and to identify potential improvements
- Traffic impact studies, master plans, and local government comprehensive plans
- Collect, maintain, and report on traffic, transit, roadway characteristics, and/or freight data
- Assist in conducting research, data analysis, and preparation of maps and graphics
- Assist in the planning and preparation of stakeholder and partner coordination meetings
- Gather costs and funding information for projects
Intern will gain hands-on experience in the following:
- Metropolitan planning process
- Transportation policy and mobility programs,
- System analytics, transportation project development, traffic data analysis, travel demand forecasting, and site impact reviews.
You will also shadow experienced PLEMO managers and employees to familiarize yourself with other internal District work units and illustrate how you fit in the overall production process
- Criteria

Students in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, or related field
You should also possess the following:
- Ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external teams
- Ability to manage competing demands and establish priorities
- Ability to possesses flexibility, tact, and excellent interpersonal skills
