This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who plans to pursue a career in the Geographic information System field. The preferred candidate will work on real-life projects in addition to being rotated throughout the Materials office while gaining experience in the following areas: Geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, bituminous engineering, and materials operations
The intern will be introduced to ArcGIS, and programming languages (Python, Arcade, etc.) and given basic tasks that would develop his/her skills in GIS technologies and practices and technical reports.
You will perform the following tasks:
- Assist in creating and updating various Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and applications.
- Develops, implements, and maintains drainage feature classes (layers) and corresponding geodatabases using GIS technologies and practices, including quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) of geodatabases and their metadata.
- Consult and collaborate with others to evaluate GIS needs in support of local and statewide GIS initiatives.
- Generate and publish technical reports, including but not limited to, specialty maps, custom map requests, and general informational maps or reports.
You will gain hands-on experience in the following:
- Policies, procedures, and standards for the maintenance of Florida's bridges and roadways.
- Field inspection, asset inventory, Maintenance Rating Program (MRP), and storm drainage.
- Materials projects with field visits, engineering analysis, and data collection.
- Field changes, daily work reports, and inspections.
- Programming languages (Python, Arcade, etc.)
You will also shadow experienced Materials managers and employees to familiarize yourself with other internal District work units and illustrate how you fit in the overall production process.
- Criteria

Students in Engineering, Transportation, Information Technology, Geography, or related Majors.
You should also possess the following:
- Knowledge of cartography, geography, mapping, and engineering terminology, concepts, principles, and analytical techniques
- Knowledge of GIS concepts.
- Knowledge of Esri’s suite of GIS products, including ArcGIS Online (AGOL) – or willing to learn.
- Ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external teams
- Ability to manage competing demands and establish priorities
- Ability to possesses flexibility, tact, and excellent interpersonal skills
